The Apple MacBook Air is the laptop light preferred by thousands of people. But now there has a new rival, the Galaxy Book S, one of the big surprises of the Samsung Unpacked August 2019. Although we have not tested fully the laptop the south Korean manufacturer, we compare the main features of the Galaxy Book S vs. MacBook Air and these are the surprising results.
Samsung achieved his first point with the keyboard, though the front had questioned Butterfly Apple. The keys of the computer Samsung’s are nice, though a bit noisy. But if you think that the Butterfly Apple is so bad and many are suing the company, is a detail.
Apple strikes back with its biggest offering of ports. Although both have two USB-C, the Macbook Air adds support for Thunderbolt 3. Also imposes itself on the quality of the material. It looks and feels as a laptop premium designed to last. While the Galaxy Book S is elegant, it is a little bit flimsy.
We reserve an opinion on the trackpad of a Samsung to try it out with more detail, but hardly will exceed that of the MacBook Air. Apple makes the best trackpads in the industry, in addition to the extensive gesture support that offers MacOS.
Samsung offers a TFT screen of 13.3 inches and 1,920 x 1,080, which is also touch. In contrast, the Macbook Air is 13.3-inches, but offers higher resolution (2,560 x 1,600) and a IPS panel upper. Although it is not touch, delivery colors more crisp and precise.
The Galaxy Book S comes equipped with the processor Snapdragon 8cx eight cores from Qualcomm. It is a competitor very capable with the Intel Core i5, but you should consider the chips to Ice Lake from Intel are next to arrive.
We still do not know much about the graphics capability. According to Qualcomm, GPU Adreno 680 8cx is the fastest in history, with up to twice the performance than the Snapdragon 850. What is clear is that you’ll get a disc SSD of 256 GB and LTE connectivity, ideal for working in any place.
Things are more clear with the MacBook Air. It features an Intel Core i5-8210Y, which attacks through tasks of a single core, surpassing rivals like the Dell XPS 13 and the HP Envy x2. However, in testing multi-core, is unable to keep up with the pace. The XPS and the Huawei MateBook X Pro almost doubled the score in the test Geekbench.
Apple offers two alternative settings, both with an Intel Core i5, eighth-generation dual-core, 1.6 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.6 GHz, 8GB of memory and Intel UHD Graphics 617. The only difference is that the base model has a SSD drive of 128 GB, while the updated version has one of 256 GB.
It is clear that Samsung is doing everything possible to make things lighter. The Galaxy Book S weighs in at just 2.1 pounds, noticeably lighter than the MacBook Air and its 2.75 pounds. This despite the fact that both teams have similar dimensions: 30.52 x 20.32 cm for the Samsung compared to 30.41 x 21.24 cm of the Apple computer.
Samsung also made efforts in terms of duration of the battery. Argues that the Galaxy Book S reached a staggering 23 hours. If the data is true, there is a catch: this figure is reached by disabling Wifi and LTE. Then, this is not a real-world test.
Even so, it is likely that excess slack in the performance of the battery of the Macbook Air. According to Apple, reaches a length of up to 13 hours of movie playback and up to 12 hours of wireless web browsing. But we only managed to get eight hours surfing the web or 10 hours watching video. Anything other than an average computer.
Conclusion: Samsung offers more
Apple recently cut the price of the Macbook Air to $1,099 us dollars. In exchange, you receive a computer that is easy to move and with excellent finishes, a trackpad, powerful and always solid Apple software.
But what will be enough to tackle the Galaxy Book S? We will not know with total certainty until we revise completely the Samsung team. By now, we know that the Galaxy Book S is lighter, has a better keyboard and it costs $100 less. Even if the duration of the battery is less than 23 hours, will probably surpass the Macbook Air. In addition, it has LTE support and a touch screen.
Of course, we still can’t say much about the performance of the Galaxy, beyond the promising suggestions that we have received on the Snapdragon 8cx. However, even without such a record, the MacBook Air has a tough competition to the front.
