Despite receiving criticism of any kind, the film Suicide Squad at DC, was a financial success, raising over $745 million dollars at the global level. It should not be surprising then that Warner Bros. have thought about doing a sequel, Suicide Squad 2. While details on the film remain scarce, we’re gathering quickly the pieces of the puzzle.
For those that have not seen, Suicide Squad, the film adopted a different approach from most of the films of superheroes, following a band of supervillanos that, once captured, are forced to work for the Government and to undertake high-risk missions. The gang includes the assassin Deadshot (Will Smith), the thief Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and the crazy Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), which, interestingly, is a psychologist.
The plot of Suicide Squad 2 is a mystery for now, as it is the complete list of protagonists and characters, although a couple of names very important you could join the cast, both in front of and behind the cameras. We know that Will Smith will be replaced, but who will take that role? And what other stars will join the team? These are the news, rumors and everything we know about the sequel to Suicide Squad 2.
Some deserters from Marvel join the squad
At the end of February, it was confirmed that Will Smith will not participate in the sequel of Suicide Squad due to difficulties of availability and poor coordination of the dates of recording, putting in doubt the fate of his character, Deadshot. Now, it seems that Warner Bros. might replace a master assassin with another. Idris Elba, who rose to fame in The Wire and Luther, and who played the wise warrior asgardiano Heimdall in the movie Thor Marvel, is ready to get in on the mask of Floyd Lawton for the second mission of the squadron of suicides, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If an agreement is reached, Elba has become the second person involved with Suicide Squad which made the jump from Marvel to DC. The director James Gunn, who co-wrote and directed the first two movies of Guardians of the Galaxy, will write and direct the sequel to Suicide Squad after his retirement-little ceremonious – Marvel Cinematic Universe on a series of tweets by former and controversial. Despite this, The Hollywood Reporter ensures that the script of Gunn is very popular in the Warner Bros. and that the studio is moving forward with the project as quickly as possible.
It is expected that Margot Robbie re-interpret their role as Harley Quinn for this second part, although the rest of the cast will be comprised primarily of characters that were not in the first film. The first rumors suggested that the leader of the Suicide Squad, Rick Flagg (played by Joel Kinnaman), he would return for the sequel, but that no longer seems to be the case.
A “weapon of mass destruction”
The popular Dwayne Johnson “The Rock”, has been joking and giving clues about “a surprise really cool” for the introduction of their DC Comics character, Black Adam, and it seems that he was not exaggerating: everything seems to indicate that the supervillain will make his debut in Suicide Squad 2, and internal sources so say in a statement to The Wrap.
It has not been officially confirmed anything so far, but according to information coming from people close to the project, the sequel will see the gang of anti-heroes working to locate a weapon of mass destruction. Apparently, your search will be Black Adam in the look, as that (surprise!) he himself will be the weapon of mass destruction they were looking for. It is an idea intriguing, not only because it would bring to the character of Johnson to the story, but because the addition of the popular actor may give a boost to the film.
The brain behind the cameras
Previously, Warner Bros. chosen Gavin O’connor to direct the sequel to Suicide Squad. O’connor, who recently directed the action film, The Accountant, wrote a script for the next film, but allegedly abandoned the project after Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, which supposedly has a very similar storyline, it got the green light in its place.
Before O’connor got the job, there were rumours that other directors were on the short list of WB, among them Mel Gibson, who apparently regained its place in the middle after the success of Hacksaw Ridge. Recently, the Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed the recent film, The Shallows on the attack of sharks, seemed to be the best option for Suicide Squad 2; however, it took on another gig directing Jungle Cruise, an upcoming movie starring Johnson.
This is what we know so far. We will keep you informed with the latest news on Suicide Squad 2 and will update this note as we receive more information.
