The coffee Keurig , have become a common device in homes and offices due to its convenience: there’s nothing like putting a K-Cup and get fresh brewed coffee. The machine has even inspired similar products to different types of foods and beverages. However, there are times when it gets a little frustrating when it becomes clogged by dirt or lime, so it is important to know how to clean a Keurig.

The lime can be particularly troublesome. The water has traces of minerals that react at high temperatures, joining surfaces nearby. As this happens time and time again, it builds up a layer similar to a limestone. This makes your Keurig to reduce the flow of water, preventing the correct completion of a cup and can eventually block it completely.

To avoid these problems, unpleasant odors, mold, and make sure your coffee maker is working correctly, it is important to clean it up. For this, we created a quick guide on how to clean a Keurig, where you will learn the best way to do it, where to start and what materials to use.

Start by unplugging your Keurig. Then, it removes all the components are removable, including the water tank, the bracket of the cup/drip tray, and the support of K-Cup inside the coffee maker. Take it to the sink and wash them with soap and water, as if they were common dishes. Let them dry while you work on other components.

This is also a good time to take a cloth or a paper towel and give it a good cleaning to all your Keurig. The coffee, especially in places like offices, you can accumulate a lot of dust and you don’t want that dust to mix with the fresh water or the coffee, so it is a good idea to give a general cleaning to the surface.

Step 2: Clean all the crevices

With a small cleaning brush (can also be a toothbrush) and a pin or clip, you can give a deep cleaning to the other components of your Keurig. While it may seem like an unnecessary step, it is important to ensure the purity of the water and the quality of the coffee. With time, the sand and dirt can accumulate in the cracks, causing blockages and affecting the taste. Get rid of the detritus (organic waste) to improve durability and performance.

Start by cleaning everything around the housing of the support of the K-Cup. The different models have methods of insertion slightly different, but the concept is the same. Use the brush to clean around the support of the capsule and the corners deep. The sand and the residues of coffee lost tend to accumulate in this area. A flashlight or good lighting can be helpful in this step. You can also use water or a cloth, but avoids the use of water with soap.

When you’re done with the steps, with a pin or clip, and examines the components that are introduced into the K-Cup. There should be a small hole in each “tooth” to pass the hot water/coffee. Insert the pin through that hole and shake it to loosen any debris caked. If your Keurig has been running slowly, it could be due to a blockage in these holes. Keurig also offers needles cleaning.

Step 3: Place vinegar and make it work

The third step of this guide on how to clean a Keurig you may be surprised. Since many components are inside of the coffee maker, there is a way of cleaning them without having to dismantle the whole machine: vinegar common kitchen. Is sufficiently acidic to remove scale build-up, but it’s harmless to the rest of the coffee maker. Take the water tank and fill it with a solution of half white vinegar and half water. Put it in the base Keurig, puts the rest of the components. It’s time to do a little bit of hot vinegar.

Turn on the Keurig in its normal configuration and begins to fill cups with mixture of vinegar until it completely disappears. This will not be very nice, but is not harmful to your Keurig, and will help to remove the tartar or dirt accumulated. It is possible to form an obstruction during this process of descaling. If this happens, open the top and use your pin to open the holes and dislodge any particles that may have become trapped.

For a complete cleaning, it would be a good idea to use two full tanks of half vinegar, half water. If your Keurig is still in good condition or does not have a long time of use, a single full tank will work well.

Note: Keurig sells a solution of descaling own. The white vinegar, however, is cheaper and easier to find. In addition, the solution of Keurig uses citric acid as its active ingredient and there are some complaints that the smell and the taste linger for a long time. There are also a number of other manufacturer’s products in the market, such as “cups cleaning” and “pods rinse”, but we do not recommend them. As you may have witnessed in these tips on how to clean a Keurig, the vinegar does the same job and for less money.

We suggest you repeat this cleaning process regularly, especially if your Keurig has a lot of use. Depending on your source water, Keurig recommends descalcificarla at least once every three to six months. Remember that it is more likely that you will have problems with hard water than with soft water. If you have recurring problems with the cal, you could use filtered water or bottled water instead of tap water.

Additional tip: Replace your filter cartridge

Some models Keurig come with filters that are part of the water tank. If your Keurig has one of them, you should replace it once in a while, every 60 tanks approximately. These filters can improve the taste, but also can help the blockages and other problems are less recurrent.

In addition to knowing the process of how to clean a Keurig, consider that the coffee can have a big difference if you use bottled water or water totally filtered instead of tap water (which is also a good idea if your unit does not have a filter). However, this could be a more expensive option.
